As part of the Warhol & Friends: Film & Music Series…don’t miss the last installment on July 22 of this unique film.
Beautiful Darling, a documentary film, pays tribute to the short but influential life of an extraordinary person — the actress Candy Darling, born James Slattery in a Long Island suburb in 1944. Candy escaped the teasing and abuse of family life growing up in Long Island to be embraced by New York?s subculture of the late 1960s and early ?70s, and was even celebrated in Lou Reed?s song ?Walk on the Wild Side.? Finding a home within Andy Warhol?s Factory, she starred in his film Flesh and also worked with Tennessee Williams, Richard Avedon, and Robert Mapplethorpe. When her family renounces her after her death, Candy?s legacy is preserved by her longtime partner, Jeremiah Newton, who produced this documentary.
Written and directed by James Rasin, 2009. 85 minutes.
Stay after the film to hear music by Velvet Underground cover band Rough Hands…who recently played at the Summer Solstice Party on June 18, 2010.
WAM preparator, Joel Vanderkamp was featured on UNCG’s “Inspire. Change.” feature page on the university home page.
