Educators Workshop: Identity in a Suitcase

Feb 22, 5pm - 8pm

Educators Workshop: Identity in a Suitcase photo

$10 WAM members; $15 non-members

Suitcases hold belongings and, by extension, identities. They imply travel, change, and migration. Identity in a Suitcase reprises a workshop from the 2017 NCAEA Conference in Wilmington where educators discovered the exhibition Baggage Claims (work by 17 international artists) and created suitcase-inspired works that reveal and conceal aspects of identity while inspiring storytelling. In this new version of the workshop, participants will also discover the work of Sanford Biggers, whose densely layered paintings on antique southern quilts recall, among other references, stories of quilts used as markers on the Underground Railroad.

A certificate of participation will be provided and can be used for CEU credit with the prior approval of your school system. Pre-registration is required. $10 WAM members; $15 non-members. To register, contact Terri Dowell-Dennis: t_dowell@uncg.edu or 336-256-1449.

Generous support from the Charlotte W. Toler Art Education Endowment allows WAM to keep workshop costs at a nominal rate.
