American Art II: 1960-Present
December 13, 2009  – March 7, 2010

For most of the twentieth century, sculpture seemed to be the poor relation of modernist art compared to painting. This changed, however, in the late 1960s when painting lost its central position and was replaced by a multiplicity of three-dimensional practices. This survey show, drawn from the Weatherspoon Art Museum’s permanent collection, will demonstrate a few of the artistic concerns that preoccupied sculptors from the 1960s on and how they relate to those of their peers working in other media. Particular attention will be given to the interest in new sources of inspiration and the exploration of new techniques and materials.
