The Faraway/Nearby: Landscapes and Urban Views from the Permanent Collection

Artists observe, interpret and express their feelings about the world around them. “The Faraway/Nearby: Landscapes and Urban Views from the Permanent Collection” brings together a diverse array of modern and contemporary outdoor images. Collectively, these landscapes and urbanscapes remind us of the wide variety of sensual, emotional and intellectual experiences that lie right outside.

Contemporary artists continued to use both city and country as expressive vehicles. Yvonne Jacquette has earned international recognition for her enigmatic aerial views of urban architecture, and this show features an early example. Ralph Goings is represented by a photorealistic rendition of a storefront. Far from the city, Stephen Pace revisits the traditional theme of the bather in the woods, only in an updated, colorful style indebted to Milton Avery.

“The Faraway/Nearby” is rounded out by numerous other examples of landscape and urbanscape, all evidence of both the depth of the Museum's collection and the ongoing creativity of contemporary artists.
