On the Path to Abstraction: Highlights of the Permanent Collection
- Sep 1, 2012 – Feb 10, 2013
- The Gregory D. Ivy Gallery, The Weatherspoon Guild Gallery
Kernodle McDuffie memorial purchase, 1954.
The exhibition features paintings and sculpture from the permanent collection that show how artists repeatedly have looked to the natural world and human form for inspiration, but have abstracted it to varying degrees for distinct expressive goals. From looking to impressionist, cubist, and surrealist models to using the materials of artmaking itself for dramatic purposes, the artists here convey the dynamism that results from seeing the familiar in new configurations and through innovative lens.
