By 1981, the Weatherspoon Art Museum was faced with the challenge of providing gallery and storage space for the growing collection. Anne and Benjamin Cone made a gift of $2 million for a new facility for the visual arts. This initial gift, plus $1.5 million raised by the local community, was matched by $3.5 million allocated by the State of North Carolina. In 1989, the Anne and Benjamin Cone Building was named and dedicated. The building design is by the internationally recognized architect, Romaldo Giurgola. Working in conjunction with Giurgola was Boney Architects of Wilmington, North Carolina. Construction of the building was awarded to Fowler-Jones Construction Company of Greensboro. The building contains 46,000 square feet of space, housing exhibition space, paper vault storage, a darkroom, carpentry shop, framing room and a 5,000 square foot storage vault for painting and sculpture. Six galleries for permanent collection and special temporary exhibitions comprise nearly 13,000 square feet. The Dillard Room, named in honor Dillard Paper Companys sponsorship of the annual Art on Paper exhibition since 1964, is used primarily for lectures and educational purposes. The Cone Building also houses the Art History program of the UNCG Department of Art, and art historians utilize a classroom, auditorium, and slide library on the first floor. The Name The Weatherspoon Art Museum is named for Elizabeth McIver Weatherspoon, who taught art education at the University for more than 30 years and was the sister of Charles Duncan McIver, the first president of the institution then called Womans College (later to become UNCG). |
