Nancy Davidson, "Spin Too!", 1995, fabric, latex, plastic, steel, rod
iron, and cotton, 122 x 84 x 60 in. Weatherspoon Art Museum; Museum
purchase with funds from the Benefactors Fund, 1995.

Drawn from the Weatherspoon’s distinguished collection, Extreme Measures pairs objects of vastly different scale and media to explore their visual affinities in structure, theme, technique, or emphasis. While contrasts in scale are most readily apparent, the pairings share characteristics that encourage further scrutiny. Despite the fact that none of the artists were responding to each other’s work per se, it is fascinating to see how they tackled similar issues in their own personal ways. Visitors are encouraged to look closely at each grouping and consider to what extent the juxtapositions further the nature of each individual object as well as amplify that of its mate when set in dialogue.

Organized by Elaine D. Gustafson, Curator of Collections.
